(四川大学2008)Is University Expansion a Good Thing
There is no denying the fact that university expansion has become a hotly debated topic in China in the past years. (Actually, ever since the state resumed its policy of holding the national college entrance examinations, the number of people enrolling in colleges has been increasing. In the past few years particularly, the number of students in colleges has been soaring.) To this issue people’s attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view. They claim that university expansion is a perfect index of the nation’s fast developing economy and society and that it reflects the rising of people’s level of education.
Others, however, hold the opposite view. They claim that university expansion like that in China is dangerous. First, university expansion often means institutions of higher education lower their standards of recruiting students, which in turn results in the degradation of the quality of college graduates. Secondly, with the sharp increase in the number of students, education resources including teaching staff, equipments, buildings and books obviously loom in short.
Personally, I believe that we should not go to extremes. On the one hand, we have to realize that university expansion is a natural result of the nation’s fast developing of economy and society in the past decades. (It need not and cannot be curbed.) On the other hand, we should not be too hasty in expanding universities. Instead, we should take all related factors into consideration and ensure that (teaching resources match the number of students in school so that) universities can expand in a healthy way.
