A Rising Branch of Science: Pharmacopsychology

Pharmacopsychology is a new frontier branch of science based on the psychological effect of medicine. As modern medical science holds, apart from working physiologically, medicine can contribute to recovery in a psychological way. The psychological effect of medicine plays a vital role in treatment of diseases. A positive state of mind can activate incretion and potential immunity, giving full play to the curing effect of medicine. A negative state of mind, on the contrary, affects the normal function of incretion and cardio-cerebral-vascular system, countering the effect of medicine. This is especially true with some chronic diseases with self-conscious symptoms.

The psychological effect of medicine results from a combination of the practitioner’s prestige, the patient’s trust in the medicine, the experience of and comment on medication, external hints, the advertising influence of the medicine, etc. Among them the most influential one is the credit standing of the medicine, which can firm the patient’s belief in its curing effect. Besides, the medical staff’s language, manner and behavior also have a strong influence on the patient’s state of mind. Comforting and encouraging words and actions or the proper choice of placeboes can work wonders or at least alleviate the patient’s mental sufferings and add to his or her confidence to fight the disease. Actually, as the major components of pharmacopsychology, the suggestion therapy and placeboes can be applied to the treatment of both physical and mental disorders.
